Design Ideas for Small Outdoor Spaces in 2021

/ image via pinterest

We asked Ashley and Michelène, interior designers with more than two decades of shared experience and the founders of Rume Design, to give you their expert tips on sprucing up outdoor spaces.

Outdoor Tiles

In a world where travel is limited and most of our time is spent in our homes, the desire to create a retreat within our own four walls feels more vital than ever. Whether your home has a balcony, or a larger outdoor area, it can be difficult to visualize, but with a few simple touches, everyone can create a gorgeous and calming outdoor haven. Just as we treat our indoor environment, creating texture and layers outdoors is important. A simple and affordable way to begin is by including removable flooring below lounge furniture. IKEA’s Runnun decking is available in an artificial grass version - great for spaces with limited natural greenery - and wood, black and beige slat options as well.

Outdoor Rugs and Pillows

We love layering natural fabrics into our outdoor palette - there are countless options available, which are resistant to the elements and, better yet, many retailers offer their own outdoor-friendly soft goods ready to use. One of our favourite outdoor rugs right now is CB2’s Theo Natural & White Outdoor rug, which uses recycled materials and brings a warm element to your space. Bonus - you can feel good knowing that the production of this gorgeous rug reduced the impact on our environment. Investing on outdoor throw pillows, such as Tonic Living’s Rhodes pillow in Canary, and their Felix pillow in Sisal will add a layered touch to your outdoor space.

Immunity Gardens

Introducing decorative pots and plants is another way to layer your space, adding colour and visual interest. In today’s health-conscious world, we love the idea of an Immunity Garden as a way to connect and interact outdoors, all the while complementing the outdoor aesthetic with colour and producing yummy food to support a healthy immune system. Liviza’s 3-Tier Raised Garden Bed, found on Wayfair, is the perfect size for beginner gardeners. Some of our favourite starter items are virus-fighting basil and colourful tomotoes rich in antioxidants!

String Lights

Is there anything not to love about outdoor string lights! Adding light outdoors can be a challenge, however West Elm has has you covered in the mood lighting department. We adore their on trend Simple String Lights, which come in a variety of finishes such as their mix of brass and black with subtle frosted round bulbs.

First Light Incense

Along with lighting, layering your outdoor space with a mixture of candles and incense will complement the natural beauty of being outdoors. We are obsessed with the vibrant and invigorating scent of Cue Calm’s First Light incense, perfect during the day and for those summer nights. Infused with citrus lemongrass; a natural insect repellent, your backyard lounge will be elevated to another level while being free of those pesky mosquitoes! Adding incense can create an instant atmosphere to make your outdoor gathering more memorable - expert garden party tip.

Michelène
Taking care of my three little girls while running a business can feel a bit intense at times and carving in some time for myself often ends up at the bottom of the priority list.  One simple thing I do almost daily to restore my mind and add a little calm to my day is a simple face mask.  A little at-home spa treatment goes a long way and helps to unwind at the end of the day!
Ashley
Mompreneuship - it definitely makes for a busy day- to-day! The best way I can find some calm is to unplug and go for a walk outside and take in the fresh air.  We try to make this a priority everyday (which is not always feasible), but with the warm weather it definitely gives me some peace.
